About OpenTalk: talk first.

OpenTalk started from a small frustration. Meeting someone new online had turned into homework: build a profile, pick photos, wait for a match, hope for a reply. We wanted the opposite. Press a button, meet a person, see if there is anything to say.

The name says it plainly. Open the site, talk to whoever turns up. Some people spell it open talk, some opentalk, some add chat on the end. It is all this place at opentalk.cam.

People find us through a surprising number of spellings. Some write OpenTalk as one capitalised word, others split it into open talk, and plenty tack chat, app or online onto the end. Thumbs slip on small keyboards too, so opentak, opentalks, opntalk and open-talk all turn up among the words people type to reach us. Each of those searches is after the same thing, and the same thing is OpenTalk at opentalk.cam.

We have no favourite version. The name is two plain words pushed together, and folks spell it just as it sounds to them. What counts is what happens once the page opens: a start button, somebody new on the other side, and a conversation you are free to keep going or skip.

A question that lands in our inbox often: is this the OpenTalk app, or only the website? It is both. OpenTalk runs inside your browser, and the very page you open on a laptop can be pinned beside your other apps and open OpenTalk edge to edge. There is no separate apk to track down and no store listing to compare, so the web version and the app are the same OpenTalk. Video is the full experience: a face, a voice and whatever is going on in the room behind them. Voice keeps the camera off from start to finish, which suits late nights, messy hair and people who simply think better out loud. Text is the quiet option, handy on a bus or in a shared flat, and it is where the translate button earns its keep. You choose a mode before each match, so a single evening can pass through all three.

Whichever you pick, it stays one to one. Random matching has no group rooms and nobody watching from the side, only you and the person who answered, until one of you decides the conversation is done.

You arrive, choose video, voice or text, and tap start. A small card introduces whoever answered, showing their nickname, age, country, level and language. When they write in a language you cannot read, the translate button under that message turns it into yours. Once the talk runs dry, next brings in someone fresh, and nobody is owed a reason.

The Reward Center sits along the top of the matching screen. Each time its countdown reaches zero it holds a reward, sometimes free matches and sometimes coins, and the following countdown starts the moment you collect. New members also begin with some free matches, so an opening night on OpenTalk does not have to cost anything at all.

No endless feed to scroll. No swipe deck of faces to judge. No registration hoop before the first hello, since guests can start at once. There is no country picker either: OpenTalk matching is random, and the surprise of not knowing where the next hello comes from is half the appeal.

Random pairing is the heart of OpenTalk, yet it is not the only way in. The Who's online list shows people who are around at this moment, and any of them can get a request from you for a coin-paid call, just the two of you on camera. A Live tab next to it opens rooms you swipe between, where you type along with translation switched on, send a gift or give the prize wheel a spin. A handful of rooms stay locked until you hold a ticket, have followed the host or have topped up at least once, and from inside any room one tap invites that person to a private call.

Profiles, follows and messages belong to OpenTalk too. Nobody has to fill in a profile before their first match, but when a chat turns into a friendship you can follow that person and pick the thread up another day.

Coins cover matches once the free ones are used up, private calls, gifts and the paid or ticketed live rooms. VIP adds a member badge, which you are free to hide, plus member prices on coin top-ups. The rule we hold ourselves to is short: when your balance is too low, OpenTalk shows the top-up screen first. A paid call never starts quietly behind your back, and every gift asks you to confirm before it is sent.

Whether you are in a random pairing, a private call or a live room, a report button is within reach. Reports reach moderators, who can warn, restrict, suspend or close an account, and anyone who looks under 18 is removed.
