Without a face to go on, small cues carry the weight. Reply speed, question marks, whether someone asks anything back: those tell you more than a photo would. A match who answers every line with a single word is usually busy or bored, and neither one is your fault.

Flip it around and put a little detail into your own messages. "Just got home from a double shift" opens more doors than "fine". Strangers tend to mirror the effort they see, so a specific line usually earns a specific one in return.

The blank box is the hardest part of OpenTalk text chat, so cheat a little. The match card tells you their country and language; ask about something local, like the dish nobody outside their city has heard of, or what the clock says over there right now.

Questions with an easy answer beat a lonely hey. Short replies are fine at first. Give a conversation three or four lines before deciding it is going nowhere, then press next without guilt.

Still stuck? Describe what is in front of you right now, the view from your window or the snack on your desk, and ask about theirs. Concrete details are far easier to answer than big questions about life.

Plenty of people treat OpenTalk text chat as step one. Type through a few matches, get a feel for the place, then set the mode to voice chat or video for your next match once you feel ready. The mode is picked before each match rather than during one, so a typed chat stays typed until it ends; if you want to hear the next stranger, change the switch first. Nothing says you have to, and plenty of people never leave the keyboard. Some evenings you will type with four or five strangers before one conversation sticks; that is ordinary in random text chat, and exactly why next exists.
